Bicycle Polo was invented by an Irishman, Richard J. Mecredy in 1891. That year The Scalp and Ohne Hast C.C. played the first game in county Wicklow.

The first international was contested between Ireland and England in 1901. The sport then became an Olympic event in the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland defeating Germany 3-1 to win gold.
